On Wednesday (September 23rd), the Obamas hosted a reception at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, during which they stood for 135 photographs with visiting foreign dignitaries in town for the UN meeting. The President has exactly the same smile in every single shot. Eerily, as this video slideshow by Eric Spiegelman reveals, he appears to be a wax sculpture or cardboard cutout. The photos are available on the State Department’s flickr page.

Today, Rasmussen Reports released the results from its weekly survey on the President’s healthcare plan. Clearly, the more America hears about these plans, the more it dislikes them … despite Obama’s massive P.R. push over the last couple of weeks. ObamaCare support is now at its lowest level yet. The biggest gap between supporters and opponents is among senior citizens.

Americans who fail to pay the penalty for not buying insurance would face legal action from the Internal Revenue Service, according to the Joint Committee on Taxation. Senator John Ensign (R-NV) received a handwritten note Thursday (September 24th) from Joint Committee on Taxation Chief of Staff Tom Barthold confirming the penalty for failing to pay the maximum $1,900 fee for not buying health insurance. Violators could be charged with a misdemeanor and could face up to a year in jail or a $25,000 penalty, Barthold wrote on JCT letterhead. He signed it “Sincerely, Thomas A. Barthold.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), said today (September 25th) a tax on high-cost insurance plans is “under consideration” as Democrats search for consensus within their ranks before taking a bill to the House floor later this fall. The current House Democratic plan (HR-3200) calls for raising income taxes on upper-income people to pay for covering the uninsured. In the Senate, Max Baucus (D-MT) has instead proposed a tax on high-cost insurance plans worth more than $8,000 for an individual policy and $21,000 for family coverage. Proponents of the insurance tax, which Obama has endorsed, say it would help to lower health care costs by encouraging people to become more cost-conscious health care consumers.

Senator Max Baucus (D-MT), who chairs the Senate Finance Committee, recently asked the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to investigate a mailer sent by the Humana healthcare company to senior citizens that it insures claiming it misled seniors about proposed changes to Medicare. The letter Humana sent to its enrollees regards its concerns about potential cuts in the Medicare Advantage program. The investigation resulted in a letter being sent to Humana, a Louisville, Kentucky based health insurance provider, and other health insurers who have a fiduciary relationship with CMS that imposes an industry-wide “gag order” ordering a halt to any additional mailings and effectively prevents companies from communicating with their customers about the impact of any pending healthcare reform legislation.

Senate Finance Committee Democrats, led by Max Baucus (D-MT), have rejected a GOP amendment that would have required a health care overhaul bill, America’s Healthy Future Act of 2009, to be available online for 72 hours before the committee votes claiming that it was a GOP delaying tactic. Republicans argued that transparency is an Obama administration goal and said their constituents are demanding that they read bills before voting. Just this past summer a groundswell of grassroots activists spanning both parties urged Congress to “read the bills” before voting. Nonetheless, democrat senators are refusing not only to read the details, but also to refusing to put them in writing before a committee vote. Meanwhile … the push by these democrats and the Obama administration is to rush the bill through … faster than public awareness can catch up.

School children in New Jersey have been taught to chant and sing praises to President Barack Obama. This video (below) was filmed at the B. Bernice Young Elementary School in Burlington, NJ and uploaded on June 19, 2009 by YouTube user “brandnuwords” who later removed it. But, several others have now posted it … apparently as documentary evidence. According to Michelle Malkin, “brandnuwords” is an account created by Charisse Carney-Nunes. She is the senior vice president of The Jamestown Project, “the award-winning author of the children’s books, I Am Barack Obama (2009),” and according to her biography, “a graduate of Harvard Law School, where she was a schoolmate of President Obama.” The video reveals these young children singing two songs, “Barack Hussein Obama” and “Mr. President, We Honor You Today” to the tune of the “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” (lyrics below)

ACORN filed suit today (September 23rd) in Maryland against conservative filmmakers James O’Keefe, Hannah Giles, and conservative web site Breitbart.com for secretly taping the organization’s employees at its Baltimore office. In the complaint, ACORN alleges that the filmmakers entered into the organization’s offices in July with a “hidden camera and microphone” and taped employees Tonja Thompson and Shera Williams. Both employees are listed as plaintiffs on the complaint, filed in the Circuit Court for Baltimore City. The lawsuit centers around a Maryland law which makes it illegal to tape someone without their consent – ACORN is alleging O’Keefe and Giles did so. ACORN is asking for $500,000 in damages to be awarded to each of the employees filmed by O’Keefe and Giles, and ACORN itself wants $1 million in damages. References:
