About 60,000 senior citizens have quit AARP since July 1 due to the group’s support for a health care overhaul, a spokesman for the organization said Monday. The membership loss suggests dissatisfaction on the part of AARP members at a time when many senior citizens are concerned about proposed cuts to Medicare providers to help pay for making health care available for all. But spokesman Drew Nannis said it wasn’t unusual for the powerful, 40 million-strong senior citizens’ lobby to shed members in droves when it’s advocating on a controversial issue. AARP is strongly backing a health care overhaul, running ads to support it and hosting President Barack Obama at an online forum recently to promote his agenda to AARP members. However, the group has not endorsed a specific bill and says it won’t support a plan that reduces Medicare benefits.

In the course of managing this political blog and becoming involved in our local tea party group, I’ve had the honor of meeting and corresponding with several exemplary Americans who I would not have met otherwise. One of these fine folks is Lloyd Marcus … the singer, song writer, author, and President of the NAACPC (National Association for the Advancement of Conservative People of Color). His songs include: “We The People”, “American Tea Party Anthem”, and more recently “Twenty Ten”. About three weeks ago, I watched a video he’d just completed entitled “Lloyd Marcus: Black Conservative”. It’s a touching story of his youth discussing racism, conservatism, and the value systems that parents impart to us. I was so moved by his openness that I felt compelled to share with him a memory regarding racism from my own youth. Until that point, I had only shared it over the years with a handful of close friends. He replied asking if he could include it in his upcoming book. (As you may be aware Lloyd occasionally posts blog entries here at CommonSense2020.)

Following a furor over how the data would be used, the White House has shut down an electronic tip box — flag@whitehouse.gov — that was set up to receive information on “fishy” claims about President Barack Obama’s health plan. E-mails to that address now bounce back with the message: “The email address you just sent a message to is no longer in service. We are now accepting your feedback about health insurance reform via: http://www.whitehouse.gov/realitycheck.”

The Obama administration filed court papers Monday claiming a federal marriage law discriminates against gays, even as government lawyers continue to defend the law. Justice Department lawyers are seeking to dismiss a suit brought by a gay California couple challenging the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act. The administration’s response to the case has angered gay activists who see it as backtracking on campaign promises made by Barack Obama. In the court papers, the administration urges the repeal of the law but says in the meantime, government lawyers will continue to defend it as a law on the books.
